Your RetroX comes pre-loaded with thousands of games, but you can easily add your own ROMs to expand the library. This step-by-step guide shows you exactly how.
What You'll Need
- Your RetroX console
- A computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
- A MicroSD card reader (or USB-C cable)
- Your ROM files (legally obtained)
Step 1: Remove the MicroSD Card
Power off your RetroX completely. Locate the MicroSD card slot on the bottom edge and gently push the card to eject it. The RetroX uses a standard TF/MicroSD card — the included 128GB card is already formatted and organized.
Step 2: Connect to Your Computer
Insert the MicroSD card into your card reader and plug it into your computer. You should see the card appear as a removable drive with several folders.
Step 3: Understand the Folder Structure
The RetroX organizes games by system. Here's the folder layout:
| Folder | System | ROM Format |
|---|---|---|
| /NES | Nintendo Entertainment System | .nes |
| /SNES | Super Nintendo | .sfc, .smc |
| /GBA | Game Boy Advance | .gba |
| /GB | Game Boy / Color | .gb, .gbc |
| /N64 | Nintendo 64 | .n64, .z64 |
| /PS1 | PlayStation 1 | .bin/.cue, .pbp |
| /PSP | PlayStation Portable | .iso, .cso |
| /MD | Sega Genesis/Mega Drive | .md, .gen |
| /MAME | Arcade (MAME) | .zip |
| /NEOGEO | Neo Geo | .zip |
Step 4: Copy Your ROMs
Simply drag and drop your ROM files into the matching system folder. For example, if you have a GBA game file called pokemon-emerald.gba, drop it into the /GBA folder.
Pro tip: For PS1 games, use the .pbp format when possible — it's compressed and saves storage space. A single PS1 game in .bin/.cue can be 600MB+, but only 200-300MB as .pbp.
Step 5: Safely Eject and Play
Once you've copied your files:
- Safely eject the MicroSD card from your computer
- Insert it back into your RetroX
- Power on — your new games will appear in the system menu automatically
Upgrading to a Bigger Card
The RetroX supports MicroSD cards up to 512GB. If 128GB isn't enough:
- Buy a high-quality MicroSD card (Samsung EVO or SanDisk Ultra recommended)
- Format it as FAT32 (use SD Card Formatter for cards over 32GB)
- Copy the entire contents of your original card to the new one
- Add more games to the extra space
Troubleshooting
Games not showing up?
- Make sure the ROM is in the correct system folder
- Check the file extension matches the supported formats above
- Restart the RetroX after inserting the card
Game crashes or won't load?
- The ROM file may be corrupted — try re-downloading
- Some PSP and N64 games are too demanding — stick to the compatibility list
That's it! Adding games to your RetroX takes less than 5 minutes. With up to 512GB of storage, you can carry your entire retro gaming collection in your pocket.
